I teamed up with the Locked In crew - a show on 4ZZZ every Monday night that reads letters written from prisoners to their loved ones, and reads texts from loved ones on the outside to their loved ones in prisons.
The 21st December has become known as #GravyDay, As the Sydney Morning Herald explains:
"Once a year, on December 21, Australians gather to celebrate #GravyDay. It’s named after Paul Kelly’s 1996 hit, How To Make Gravy and falls on the 21st because that’s the date mentioned at the start of the song. At this point, Gravy Day is arguably bigger than Christmas Day."
The song is a letter written from a prisoner to his family for Christmas. The celebrity chef influencers have turned it into a day to share their gravy recipes, drowning out the social justice conversation which previously took place on the 21 December. To help us to take back some of that conversation, we made our own version of the song.
I was handed a box with a bunch of the letters Locked In are sent for the show every Monday night (a few hundred or so). After some studio magic from Rory at Action Park Sounds and Cam from Unnecessary Knowledge/Incremental Records, we have our very own 4ZZZ version of this famous track using only words written in letters from 4ZZZ Locked In listeners.
